The First Sunday Bird Walks at Greenwich Point began in 2005, when wildlife rehabilitator Meredith Sampson of Wild Wings LLC got together a group of avid birders and knowledgeable naturalists, who agreed to lead a monthly series of walks at the park they all loved to bird.
Wild Wings, the Bruce Museum and Audubon Greenwich served as original co-sponsors. Friends of Greenwich Point joined as co-sponsor with Wild Wings LLC in 2019.
Current leaders are Cynthia Ehlinger, Matt Popp, and Meredith Sampson. Former bird walk leaders include Stefan Martin, Ryan MacLean, Bo Hopkins, Brian O’Toole, Mike Aurelia and Debby Ethridge.
Participants on the bird walks range from youngsters to seniors, and may number from 2 to 32 depending on the season and weather. We bird rain or shine. Only when the park is closed (for hurricanes, flooding, blizzard or pandemic rules) is the event cancelled.
